The Battle of Ramadi (2006-2007) - Framed Canvas Map
History: After the 2nd Battle of Fallujah in November 2004 the Sunni insurgency’s center of gravity moved to Ramadi. During 2005 the security situation in Ramadi deteriorated significantly with an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 insurgents operating within the city.
On June 6th 2006 the Ready First Brigade, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division assumed responsibility for AO Topeka from 2nd Brigade, 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard. AO Topeka was roughly the size of New Hampshire and included the city of Ramadi. Ramadi was a large city with an estimated population of 400,000.
The Ready First Brigade adopted the counter-insurgency strategy of clear, hold and build which entailed the creation of several Combat Outposts (COPs). Another important line of effort was creation of the Anbar Awakening Council that consisted of tribal leaders who supported the destruction of insurgents in Ramadi.
By the end of 2006 the battle had resulted in 75 U.S Service Members killed in action with over 200 wounded. The insurgents had between 749 and 1,100 killed in action.
In January 2007 Task Force Raider, 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division assumed responsibility for Ramadi and by mid-2007 the level of violence within the city dropped significantly. This map is dedicated to the men and women who served in Ramadi.
Sadly the Islamic State invaded Ramadi in November 2014 and successfully captured Ramadi in May 2015. In August 2015 the Iraq Army and it's coalition partners launched a counteroffensive which led to Ramadi's liberation in February 2016.
