Camp Victory was occupied by the U.S. military in 2003 and for eight years the base played a pivotal role in the creation of a free Iraqi state. At its peak Camp Victory housed 40,000 Service Members. The base included several lavish palaces built by Saddam Hussien. The Victory Base Complex (VBC) occupied the area surrounding the Baghdad International Airport. The VBC was made up of several smaller bases including Camp Liberty, Camp Striker, and Camp Slayer. Camp Victory was a critical facility in the war effort and was the HQ of Multi-National Corps – Iraq. Camp Victory transitioned to Iraqi Army control in December 2011. The U.S. handed over the base to the Iraqi government in December 2011.
This map is in honor of the men and women who served at Camp Victory.
